Invest in the future of leprosy care | The Leprosy Mission

The current generation of leprosy nurses in India will soon retire. Who will replace them?

Working as a leprosy nurse isn't a glamorous job, and even today it still carries lots of stigma. But the future of leprosy expertise is in crisis. Together, we must commit to raising up a new generation of nurses who will safeguard the future of expert leprosy care.

A gift from you will help build a Nursing Training Centre at Salur Hospital. There is a desperate need for this centre of excellence in leprosy training. And the new Training Centre will offer the only leprosy-specific nursing course in the whole of India.

Irene's story

When Irene was just a young girl, God called her to be a leprosy nurse. Like you, she was inspired by the dedication of those serving people affected by leprosy. She could see their passion and how they demonstrated the love of Jesus to their patients.

Irene's family didn't have much money, but she prayed that somehow a door would open for her to train as a nurse. And God answered her prayer. Irene came to The Leprosy Mission Hospital at Salur, one of India's flagship leprosy hospitals. Here, her dream came true. And today, thirty-seven years later, she still lovingly nurses leprosy patients.

But like so many of her colleagues in India, Irene is no longer a young woman. The current generation of leprosy nurses won't be around forever. Who will replace them? "I will retire in three years and I would like the younger generation to continue this work," she told us.

Today, you can stand with dedicated nurses like Irene and help raise up a new generation of leprosy nurses. Together, we must act now to change the future of leprosy care in India.
