Protap loved his job in the tea gardens of Sylhet, Bangladesh. His wage supported his wider family and as a newlywed, he was hoping that he and his wife would soon start to think about becoming parents. But then leprosy changed everything. Long before he realised what was happening, the disease was damaging the nerves in his hands. Eventually, he was unable to straighten his fingers. And then, he could no longer work without injuring himself.
Leprosy shrunk Protap’s world. He began to struggle with depression, feeling he had no purpose in life and worrying about his family's future.
But Protap and others like him don't have to feel alone. You can provide vital treatment, making sure that leprosy doesn't rob them of their future. It costs £120 to provide reconstructive surgery to repair hands damaged by leprosy, giving people like Protap back their mobility and independence. To end leprosy in the tea gardens of Bangladesh and bring healing and restoration to people like Protap, we must act now. Our teams there are finding more cases of leprosy than they have ever seen and the longer the disease is left untreated, the more damage it causes.
By donating today, you won’t just be giving people like Protap the use of their hands. You will be giving them the chance to rebuild their lives. And maybe even the chance to expand their world. That really is life-changing.
